Hey Body Evolvers!
So today I wanted to talk to you about a little chemical in your brain that could be having a big effect on your weight loss adherence.
“Erm, whats that?” I hear you ask.
Well, it’s a neurotransmitter that’s used in your brain. Essentially it allows you brains nuerons to speak to each other by transmitting chemical messages between them.
But problems arise when serotonin levels are low.
Firstly, it affects your mood. Low serotonin equals a low mood. And this straight off the bat hurts your ability to stay motivated. Exercise suddenly seems a lot less fun.
But another potential problem with serotonin lies in its ability to manipulate your appetite center, found in the hypothalamus region of your brain.
It appears that there’s a link between low serotonin and the firing of synapses that make your cravings kick in. So all your temptations suddenly seem like a great idea!
This triple threat of lowering your mood, your exercise participation and your nutrition plan adherence halts any weight loss immediately. Which are bad times!
So how do you solve the problem? How can you get a serotonin boost?
Well it seems its got a circular relationship with mood and physical activity. Promoting them and being promoted by them.
So step one, improve your mood. Listen to some music, watch a funny video or talk to a friend. Whatever it takes!
And for step two, get out of your seat and get some activity in. Bonus points if it gets you outside so you can catch some rays from the sun!
Both of these tricks will boost your serotonin. And this further boosts your mood, increase your motivation and curb your temptations. And so your serotonin increases more, and on and on. Its a positive spiral upwards, each stage encouraging the next.
So get going!
